A rock that is a mechanical mixture of different minerals and/or rock fragments (clasts). A breccia may also be distinguished by the origin of its clasts: (monomict breccia: monogenetic or monolithologic, and polymict breccia: polygenetic or polylithologic). The proportions of these fragments within the unbrecciated material, exhibiting areas of dark melted material surrounding and injected between areas of lighter, unmelted material. The likely heat source is an impact event which injected melt into regions of cooler host rock, thereby promoting rapid cooling of the melt, and leaving the host rock relatively unaltered. Dhofar 010 is shocked to stage S3, and has been weathered to grade W3. The specimen shown above is an 8.62 g partial end section.
