Atmophile Element

Elements in the Goldschmidt (geochemical) classification that tend to remain on the surface or atmosphere including Hydrogen (H), Carbon (C), Nitrogen (N), and noble gases, namely Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr),  Xenon (Xe), and Radon (Rn). These elements can be found in their elemental form or as molecules such as carbon dioxide and water. The notable exception to the list of atmophile elements is Oxygen (O). Since Oxygen is mainly present  in the Earth’s crust as oxide and silicate minerals, it is  commonly considered a lithophile element. (Source: Atmophile Elements by  Daniele L. Pinti 2017)

Goldschmidt classification:

  1. Lithophile (rock-loving)
  2. Siderophile (iron/metal-loving)
  3. Chalcophile (ore/sulfide-loving )
  4. Atmophile (gas-loving)
